SpanishWe usually offer both French and Spanish to all grade levels each year. Other languages are offered from time to time. Our program draws heavily upon the Natural Approach and Total Physical Response, two well-established teaching methods proven effective through years of research and experimental field studies. The main objectives of our Spanish program are to help each student attain an acceptable degree of proficiency in the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in an informal and relaxed environment and to introduce students to the cultures of Spanish-speaking people. To accomplish these goals, our program focuses on the student's world and stimulates their interest through physical activity, attractive visual aids, and appealing listening materials. In the upper grade Spanish classes, we continue to use the Natural Approach and Total Physical Response methods along with music and games so that learning is easy and fun. The class is not competitive and focuses mainly on comprehension. We do a lot of storytelling where the students illustrate a story, retell it in their own words, then change the story to make it their own. Our goal is for the students to enjoy speaking Spanish and to appreciate the customs and cultures of Spain, Latin America, and other Spanish speaking countries.
