MusicThe Discovery Center School offers music lessons in grades K-12 for a minimal fee. The program is designed to offer fun, student-centered group lessons that emphasize building confidence and enthusiasm for playing music instead of demanding perfection. The lessons are taught in groups of two to four students, but each student works individually and moves at his or her own pace using electronic keyboards and headphones. Private lessons are available for older students. The students perform in one or two concerts during the school year.
In grades 4-12, students work with Alfred's System of Note Reading. This is the best system for young people because the note reading method promotes their overall cognitive development. In grades 5-12, students play a wide variety of music including Jazz, Pop, and Classical. Clarinet, flute, or saxophone lessons are available and guitar lessons are offered to students in grades 5-12. A drum set, advanced guitar, and keyboard are available for use in the after school jam sessions where students can work on current songs and learn to improvise and play solos. The goals of the program are to teach the joy that comes from playing music for others, the sense of pride and self-esteem that playing an instrument can bring, and the self-discipline it takes to prepare for a performance.
